Short description:

Box made of stump beech with a sunken lid made of Japanese pagoda tree and a handle made of Italian driftwood. The lid was treated using the Yakisugi method. The box has a height of approx. 8.5 cm and a diameter of approx. 8.5 cm.

Material:

The used Together with my friend Lasse, I salvaged beech wood from a forest near Oldenburg. The special grain of the beech is the result of the wood's stagnation . This occurs when the wood lies on the forest floor for a long time (in this case at least two years) and is colonized by fungi that decompose it. If this process is interrupted at the right time by drying the wood, interesting patterns such as black lines and unique color nuances emerge.

The lid is made of wood from the Japanese pagoda tree (Styphnolobium japonicum). Despite its exotic name, this wood comes from Europe. Originally native to Japan and China, the pagoda tree was introduced to Europe in the 16th century and is now a popular park and street tree. The open-pored wood is characterized by a clear color contrast between early and late wood.

The lid was treated using the Yakisugi method and then brushed . This process of wood finishing involves burning the surface in a controlled manner. This technique originated in Japan in the 18th century when farmers were looking for ways to protect their wooden houses.

The box has a handle made of driftwood that washed up in Italy and was collected during my studies. Due to the small size of the wood, the exact type cannot be determined. This means that the origin of the handle also remains a mystery.
