Short description:
Since hawthorn rarely grows large enough to be used to turn handcrafted objects, this bowl is a special feature. The natural edge and an opening created by a rotten spot complement the warm wood tone and the intense color of the wood. The bowl has a diameter of approx. 20.5 cm and a height of approx. 15 cm.
Material:
Hawthorn ( Crataegus laevigata 'Paul's Scarlet') is an ornamental form of hawthorn that stands out due to its bright red flowers and is particularly found in gardens and parks.
The wood of the hawthorn is hard and dense, but is rarely used in wood processing because the tree is valued primarily for its flowers rather than for its wood.
This bowl was made from an old tree that stood in my cousin's neighbors' garden in the Krusenbusch district of Oldenburg and fell over during a winter storm. When we sawed it up, we discovered rotten spots that probably contributed to the instability - but made the wood an interesting material to work with.
